Heritage Festival: Boy out of the Country

Dunolly Town Hall (Dunolly Historic Precinct), Broadway, 6, Dunolly, Victoria, 3472

15 May 2016

Funny, fast paced, and written in an Australian poetic vernacular reminiscent of the poetic tradition of Banjo Patterson, Boy out of the Country tells a story of land, family and belonging. A family property worthless for generations is suddenly re-zoned as part of a regional housing estate to accommodate an ever increasing urban sprawl. It is a play where old Australia meets a new Australia: where a country cop comes to terms with catchment areas, where a fifth bedroom is more important than a backyard and where new technologies have the potential of uncovering old family secrets. Written with wit and in crackling Australian idiom by award winning playwright Felix Nobis, this is a fast paced, funny and highly satisfying piece of theatre about life beyond the big city.

Heritage Festival: Eaglehawk: Tour of our Town

Town Hall, High Street, 6, Eaglehawk, Victoria, 3556

15 May 2016

Gold was discovered at Eaglehawk in 1852 and the Borough was formed just over a decade later. The first councillors were business people, the earliest traders of Eaglehawk. These men saw the need for infrastructure for the fledgling hamlet, if it was to develop once gold deposits were played out. It was their foresight which saw Eaglehawk develop as 'The Model Borough'.

This tour will commence with a stroll through the Eaglehawk CBD. You will learn about the business people of Eaglehawk from the past to the present as local tour guides share with you their abundant knowledge of the former Borough. The tour will then visit the historic council chamber in the Town Hall, which sits proudly in Brassey Square. The town hall is the heart of Eaglehawk, the people who visit it the soul.

Bookings Required.

Heritage Festival: Ride the WWI Trams

The Ballarat Tramway Museum, Wendouree Parade, 6, Lake Wendouree, Victoria, 3350

29 May 2016

Discover the excitement of riding in historic electric trams that were running during the First World War.

Melbourne's electric tramways were built just before the outbreak of war in 1914. The trams from this era were replaced by the famous 'W class' trams in the 1930s. The old trams were not retired, but sold to the State Electricity Commission's Provincial Tramways in Ballarat, Bendigo, and Geelong, where they continued in service for many years.

The Ballarat Tramway Museum has a fleet of nine trams, built between 1911 and 1917, which will be running on a surviving section of the Ballarat Tramway, first built in 1887. This is a unique opportunity to see the heritage tram fleet in action, and ride in a variety of beautifully restored trams.

Special opportunities will exist for photographers.
