The scenic drive off the Princes Highway from Bairnsdale down to the beautiful lakeside village of Paynesville, winds its way along the Mitchell River. Historically, Paynesville was known as "Toonalook". This name was given by the original inhabitants, the Gunai/Kurnai people, who lived and cared for this region for thousands of generations. The aboriginal term is translated as meaning "plenty of fish"
