The Golden Tag fishing competition is back, bigger and better than before.

Recreational fishers have the opportunity to explore regional Victoria and land a tagged fish worth up to $10,000 as part of an expanded Golden Tag competition to boost tourism across the state.

The Victorian Fisheries Authority started the Golden Tag competition in February 2020, successfully encouraging visitation to Gippsland and the state’s north-east as communities recovered from bushfires.

Lakes Entrance

King George Whiting are plentiful around the Barrier, the islandsandall the way to Metung and Shaving Point biting on prawn and pipi. Town jetties forTrevally taking blue bait. The rock wall at Kalimna Jetty hasWrasse and squid are about the floating jetty and footbridge. King Fisharound 4-6 kghave returned to the town jetties. Offshore, 8kg Snapperare being caughtandsome Flathead closer to the beach. Give the pipelinea try. Water temperatureisaround 19 degrees.

Lake Tyers

The top of the Nowa Nowa Arm hasBream, Flathead and Estuary Perch taking lures and minnow. Other spots to try are Devil’s Hole, Cherry Tree and Long Point.

Mitchell River

Around Eagle Point, Two Bells and all the way to the river mouth for Flathead and Bream. Best results using prawn, soft plastics, shrimp and spider crab.

Tambo River

Best spots for Bream are at the Cliffs, the power lines and the river mouth. Best results using fresh-water yabbies and frozen prawn.

 From the reeds, the car bodies and up to the poplars are the best spots for Bream and Perch taking shrimp, prawn, yabbies and worm. The “odd” Flathead is about.


There is plenty of King George and Sand Whiting to be caught around Nungurner Jetty, Shaving Point and shallow sand section on the King Lake Side. Best baits are pipi, mussel and worm.


Whiting are about Carstairs Bank and the south east side of Raymond Island. Best baits using bass yabbies, mussels and pipi. The “odd” Flathead are cruising about taking soft plastics and prawn.

Holland's Landing

Try the Strait for Bream and Flathead. Blonde Bay and towards Storm and Pelican Points for best results using prawn, soft plastics and worm.


Lake Corringal for Bream and Flathead. Salmon and Tailor on incoming tide taking lures. Surf beach for Salmon.Offshore,is producing good fish when able to get out.

Bemm River

The Entrance is open. The lake and channel are best for Bream, Flathead and Trevally. Surf for Salmon on pilchard and poppers

Tamboon Inlet

Rivermouth for Bream taking cut crab and prawn. Peters Rock forTrevally on pilchard. Pelican Point for Flathead taking blue bait and lures. Surf beach for Salmon.


Both lakes are good for Bream and Flathead using prawn and soft plastics. Give lures a go. Offshore for “Gummies” and surf beach for Salmon

Omeo High Country

Fishing is a bit patchy with the warmer water. There are some fish about, you will just have to work for them.
