Gippsland Victoria Australia Accommodation and Information

Wineries of Gippsland

The GippsIand Wine Industry beginning dates to the early part of the Twentieth century with vineyards scattered all over GippsIand as settlers to this new region experimented with different agricultural pursuits. Using techniques learned in their homelands they endeavoured to forge out a living in a new environment. Some succeeded and others failed but unfortunately due to the economic depression and variability of the climate, all vineyards and wineries failed to exist into the middle of this century It was not until the 1970s when wine popularity increased that people began planting vines in this region again. Armed with new technology and grape varieties suited to the GippsIand environment small vineyards started emerging once more. Some 30 licensed wineries now exist in GippsIand with up to another 40 Vineyards supplying grapes to the regions wineries and others farther afield in the Yarra Valley.

GippsIand is a unique Wine Zone recognised by the EEC for export that offers its winemakers the opportunity to produce premium cool climate wines. The GippsIand climate is influenced by the Great Dividing Range to the north, the Strzelecki Ranges in the mid& and Bass Strait to the south. This produces mild summers with sea breezes, cooling temperatures and prolonging the ripening process, allowing vines to develop more flavours in the grapes. The resultant wines have full fruit flavours and rich cool climate characters.

Although soil rainfall and individual microclimates vary from vineyard to vineyard throughout GippsIand the overall quality of the wines produced in GippsIand is obvious to the taste.
Full chardonnay, floral riesling, fruity pinot noir, grassy sauvignon blanc, peppery shiraz and spicy cabernet are just some of the varieties available to tantalise your taste buds.

The wineries of GippsIand offer you a chance to meet the people behind the label chat with the winemaker and make new friends as you discover this emerging hospitable wine region of GippsIand So dont miss the opportunity to taste and sample GippsIand finest with an endless platter to tantalise your tastebuds.

When you plan your tour of GippsIand, dont forget the gourmet delights of this rich Regional Area Fresh fruits, smoked meats, award winning cheeses, platters of fresh seafood and multitudes of flavours can be found just around the next corner at the many provenders, eateries & restaurants.

Owned and operated by Fleur and Tony Dawkins, with all fruit grown in our own vineyards so we can have full control of the wine making process from vine to bottle, Glenmaggie Winery holds to the philosophy that great wine is grown in the vineyard first and best made simply in the winery later with only minimal interventions such as filtering and preservative additions.

Glenmaggie award winning cool climate wines will complement a menu that can range from a simple fare, to the more intricate - focusing on local produce, you choose.

 Narkoojee Winery

Narkoojee

Narkoojee Winery's name comes from 'Narkoojee' meaning 'place of flowers'. This beautiful winery is located in Eastern Gippsland where the cool, long-ripening period produces classic, cool climate wines.

Nestled in the foothills of the Great Dividing Range, in a beautiful setting with magnificent views of the Strzelecki Ranges. The winery is approximately a two and half hour drive from Melbourne and a comfortable train ride from Melbourne to Traralgon. Narkoojee is a 12 minute drive from Traralgon.

At the Cellar Door, visitors can taste the hand-crafted wines and great food from the restaurant, by Jorg. The Mediterranean-inspired fare shows the delft touch of the high-skilled chefs, while the welcoming attitude of the front of house staff is constantly praised.

Nicholson River Winery

Nicholson River Winery was established in 1978 and is owned and operated by Juliet and Ken Eckersley.

They make small quantities of speciality wines intended to be enjoyed with food. Varieties include Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Semillon, Viognier, Pinot Noir, Syrah or Shiraz, Sangiovese, Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon.

There are sparkling, botrytis and preservative-free wines, whilst the styles are more European than traditional Australian.

The setting is picturesque with a commanding view of the Nicholson River and rolling hills.

Platters of local cheese and antipasto are available and on select occasions wood-fired pizza can be enjoyed alfresco with a glass of wine .

Nicholson River's Chardonnay is considered by many to be one of Australia's greatest Chardonny's. It is intense and powerful, but structure rather than really fruity like other Chardonnay's. It comes from a tiny little place on Victoria's east coast near Lakes Entrance.

Nicholson River also has an excellent Pinot Noir that is definitely worth tasting a few times.

'Ken and Juliet Eckersley's Nicholson River is one of Victoria's most distinctive and beautiful wineries. Above a cliff on one side overlooking a Streeton-like view of the beautiful Nicholson River valley, with a broad panorama across the distant Gippsland Lakes and Bass Strait on the other side, the cellar door, an 1880 farmhouse, is the perfect place to chat with Ken, whose thoughtful, intelligent views on wine are refreshingly out of the mainstream. The wines made here cross a broad range of styles, with Chardonnay the most famous, Pinot Noir too, but the whole range of wines makes a unique tasting experience.' Ralph Kyte-Powell

Cannibal Creek Vineyard

Cannibal Creek Vineyard

Cannibal Creek Vineyard hand picks their grapes and their wines are crafted with a minimal amount of handling to produce a traditional style, premium wine.

Cannibal Creek Vineyard plan to open a new cellar door with kitchen and cheese room and is currently being planned. All updates will also be posted on their website, please view for further information.

'Cannibal Creek winery isn't very far from the M1 freeway that roars through the Gippsland countryside, but its countrified quiet takes you light years away. Pockets of forest, wide pastures, and the simple corrugated iron buildings of Cannibal Creek make it a great place to get in the mood for a tour of Gippsland's wine country. The natives are friendly and the wine quality is very high. The Chardonnays, Sauvignon Blancs and Pinot Noirs made here have been regional stars for a long time, now a top notch sparkling wine has added fizz to the range, and a fascinating new fortified drop, made in the style of Pineau des Charentes from western France, tempts those with a taste for the sweeties.'
