Cockatoo Valley is situated in the scenic southern Barossa, in a stunning setting of Australian bushland. Bushwalking along the many trails throughout nearby Para Wirra Conservation Park may reveal glimpses of native wildlife, with western grey kangaroos frequently seen at dawn and dusk, and emus strutting through the picnic grounds, especially at lunchtime. An abundance of native Australian birds call this park home, so why not pack a picnic and spend the day immersed in a wildlife experience.

Close at hand are the old gold diggings at the Barossa Goldfields, where gold was discovered in 1868. The Barossa Goldfields Walks consist of three circuit trails which all start at Bowden Cottage on Goldfields Road. These trails range from 1 hour to 2.5 hours, with interpretive signs providing an insight into life of the early gold miners. The site also contains a small museum featuring mining implements, and settler’s cottage and grounds.

At Barossa Reservoir you can walk across the famous Whispering Wall, which was a revolutionary engineering feat for its day. With construction commencing in 1899, by its completion in 1903, the dam was 36 metres high and attracted attention from all over the world. Thanks to its unique acoustic properties, visitors can whisper from one end of the dam wall and be clearly heard at the other, more than 100 metres away.
