Foster lies where South GippsIands lovely rolling hills meet the waters of the Corner Inlet Marine Park. The town began its existence known as Stockyard Creek: a stopping place for pioneering drovers moving cattle between Port Albert and Western Port, but was renamed in 1871. During the 1870s the picturesque small town also saw a period as a gold settlement. Mining ceased in the 1930s and its existence since then has been as a service centre to the dairying community and as the major service centre for the Wilsons Promontory National Park, only 30 minutes away. Shopping in the well maintained town is a mixture of the old and new. Its gardens and creek provide a focal point for activity. The rolling hills that envelope the town provide inspiring views over Corner Inlet to the peaks of the Prom.
