Latrobe is a river town famous for its heritage and the fresh produce that grows in the region's rich and fertile soils.
Dating back to the 1820s, Latrobe was once the main port of the North West. The area's rich heritage can be explored at the Courthouse Museum and the Australian Axemans Hall of Fame.
There are more than 70 heritage listed buildings in the town, with many that can be seen on a simple stroll or guided tour down Gilbert Street with its eclectic shops, cafes, arts and crafts and antique stores.
Latrobe is often called the platypus capital of the world, with a platypus interpretation centre and a natural home at Warrawee Forest Reserve, and guided tours that reveal the habits and charm of this curious flat-billed creature.
And in true Tasmanian fashion, Latrobe comes to life with various festivals throughout the year, including Chocolate Winterfest celebrating all things chocolate, and Henley on Mersey - held every Australia Day - featuring wood chopping, egg throwing, model boat sailing and ferret racing.
There are lots of eateries serving fresh produce, plus scenic farm gates and vineyards where you can sample food from the source. For chocolate lovers, a visit to Anvers Chocolate Factory is a must.
